Last Judgement
Guido of Siena·1280
Historical Context
This Last Judgement panel by Guido of Siena, one of the earliest identified Sienese painters, dates to around 1280 and reflects the monumental eschatological imagery central to Gothic church decoration. Guido's workshop was instrumental in establishing the Sienese school of painting, which would later produce Duccio and Simone Martini. Now at the Museo d'arte sacra della diocesi di Grosseto, this panel demonstrates the didactic function of Gothic art, presenting the faithful with a vivid reminder of divine justice and the ultimate fate of souls.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera and gold on panel, the work features the hierarchical composition typical of Last Judgement scenes, with Christ enthroned at center and the saved and damned arranged symmetrically. Guido's style combines Byzantinizing formality with the emerging Sienese taste for decorative elegance and refined color harmonies.
