The Ponton de la Félicité at Asnières
Paul Signac·1886
Historical Context
The Ponton de la Félicité at Asnières (1886) was painted the same year Seurat showed La Grande Jatte, and shows Signac working in the same stretch of the Seine suburban landscape. Asnières was the site both of Seurat's Bathers and of Signac's own early plein-air explorations. The pontoon bridge, a temporary floating structure, was typical of the informal riverside infrastructure frequented by Parisians on leisure outings. Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, holds this early divisionist work.
Technical Analysis
The study applies systematic dot-work to the reflective water surface and pontoon structure, demonstrating Signac's full adoption of divisionist method in the wake of Seurat's influence. Warm and cool dots are interspersed to build optical mixture across the river surface.
