St. Margaret, St. Magdalene and St. Catherine.
Spinello Aretino·1350
Historical Context
This panel depicting Saints Margaret, Magdalene, and Catherine by Spinello Aretino, dating to around 1350 and now in the National Museum in Wroclaw, shows three of the most popular female saints in Gothic devotion. Spinello Aretino, born in Arezzo but trained in Florence, was one of the most prolific and accomplished painters of the late Trecento, working across Tuscany on both frescoes and panel paintings. His energetic, narrative-driven style bridges the Giottesque tradition and early fifteenth-century developments.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel. Spinello renders the three saints with the vigorous, expressive figure style that characterizes his work, using strong outlines, rich drapery patterns, and clearly differentiated physiognomies against a burnished gold ground.
