John William Montagu (1811–1884), 7th Earl of Sandwich as a Young Man
George Hayter·1832
Historical Context
The young 7th Earl of Sandwich was twenty-one when Hayter painted this portrait in 1832, the same year the painter was deeply engaged in his monumental project documenting the first Reformed Parliament. Hinchingbrooke House, the Montagu family seat in Huntingdonshire, retains the painting as part of its historic collection. Hayter balanced these private commissions with his larger parliamentary project throughout the 1830s. George Hayter was the preeminent British history and portrait painter of the early Victorian era, appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria in 1841.
Technical Analysis
Hayter captures the youthful aristocrat with a directness that avoids excessive flattery, the modeling of features firm and naturalistic. The background is kept deliberately plain to focus attention on the sitter’s face.
