Saint Peter

This Saint Peter at the Courtauld Gallery, dated around 1460, belongs to Lippi's late period when the painter was working on the great fresco cycle of the lives of Saints Stephen and John the Baptist in Prato Cathedral. Panel paintings from this period share the monumental figural style he was developing in fresco. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays linear grace combined with a new emotional warmth, delicate color, innovative compositional devices including the tondo format, lyrical landscape backgrounds.

Peter's commanding presence is built through firm contour drawing and sculptural modeling, with Lippi's refined handling of light falling across the apostle's robes creating subtle folds and textures.
