Coat of Arms (cassone, side panel) by Francesco di Giorgio

Coat of Arms (cassone, side panel)

Francesco di Giorgio·1472

Historical Context

Cassone side panels bearing coats of arms were purely decorative-heraldic components of Florentine and Sienese wedding chests, proclaiming the alliance between two families through the display of their combined blazons. Francesco di Giorgio produced several such cassone components during his Sienese period; the heraldic panel was the most formulaic part of the commission, typically delegated to workshop assistants working from the master's design. The panel nevertheless required skilled goldsmiths' work in the rendering of the metallic colours and heraldic devices.

Technical Analysis

The coat of arms is rendered with the flat, heraldic precision appropriate to its function — no three-dimensional illusionism, but clean divisions of colour and crisp device drawing. Francesco's workshop would have used mordant gilding for the gold areas, the standard technique for heraldic metalwork on wooden panels.
