Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara with Donors (triptych, left & right panels)
Master of Frankfurt·1500
Historical Context
The Master of Frankfurt produced these pendant panels of Saints Catherine and Barbara with donors for the Manchester Art Gallery. The combination of female saints with kneeling donor figures was a standard format for Netherlandish triptych wings, designed to frame a central devotional scene. His altarpieces reflect the influence of Quentin Metsys and the Antwerp school, with meticulous Flemish naturalism organized in Italianate compositions This work belongs to the generation of European painters who synthesized medieval devotional conventions with Renaissance naturalism, creating an art that served both institutional liturgical needs and the growing private devotional market of the period.
