Nativity
Historical Context
Mariotto Albertinelli painted this Nativity around 1504 for the Courtauld Gallery. Albertinelli was Fra Bartolomeo's closest collaborator and friend, sharing his workshop and developing a parallel style that combined the Dominican friar's monumental approach with a somewhat warmer, more sensuous palette. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows Albertinelli's characteristic soft modeling and warm coloring, with a balanced pyramidal composition that reflects the High Renaissance principles he shared with Fra Bartolomeo and the influence of Raphael's early Florentine period.
