Madonna and Child with Saint Anne, Saint Augustine and Saint Jerome
Historical Context
The Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece created this Madonna and Child with Saints Anne, Augustine, and Jerome for Waddesdon Manor. The Cologne master's highly distinctive style, with its elongated figures and jewel-like surfaces, made his works among the most recognizable products of the late-medieval Rhineland. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel displays the master's signature ornamental richness, with elaborate textile patterns, gem-like coloring, and the distinctive elongated proportions that make his devotional panels immediately identifiable.
