Madonna and Child
Ortolano·1505
Historical Context
Ortolano, whose real name was Giovanni Battista Benvenuti, was a Ferrarese painter active in the early sixteenth century. This Madonna and Child for the Glasgow Museums reflects his devotional painting production, which combined the Ferrarese linear tradition with the softer modeling he adopted from Raphael and other contemporary influences. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique. Such devotional panels served both liturgical contexts in churches and chapels and private devotional use in the homes of wealthy families who maintained personal altars and oratories.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates Ortolano's blend of Ferrarese precision in drawing with the warmer, more atmospheric approach he absorbed from Raphael and Garofalo, creating a devotional image of quiet refinement.
