The Adoration of the Shepherds
Historical Context
Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, son of Domenico Ghirlandaio and a respected Florentine painter, created this Adoration of the Shepherds around 1506 for the Manchester Art Gallery. Ridolfo maintained his father's workshop tradition while absorbing influences from Fra Bartolomeo and the young Raphael, producing competent religious paintings for Florentine churches and patrons. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
The Nativity scene demonstrates Ridolfo's solid Florentine draftsmanship and warm coloring, with a balanced composition that reflects both his father's narrative clarity and the newer atmospheric tendencies of the High Renaissance.
