Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Master of Frankfurt

Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Master of Frankfurt·1515

Historical Context

The Master of Frankfurt painted this Saint Catherine of Alexandria around 1510, depicting the learned martyr with her characteristic wheel and palm of martyrdom in the Flemish tradition of single-figure saint portraiture. This anonymous painter active in Frankfurt and Antwerp took his name from a major altarpiece commissioned for Frankfurt's Church of the Holy Cross, and his saint figures maintain the dignity and refinement of the Brussels workshop tradition he was trained in. Saint Catherine of Alexandria was one of the most venerated saints in medieval and Renaissance Europe, patron of scholars, philosophers, and young women, and her image appeared in countless devotional contexts. The Master of Frankfurt's version shows careful attention to the saint's elaborate costume and the psychological presence that distinguishes fine devotional painting from routine workshop production.

Technical Analysis

The panel shows the Master of Frankfurt's characteristic Antwerp technique with detailed costume rendering, bright color, and the refined surface finish typical of his workshop's devotional production.
