The Last Supper (copy after Leonardo da Vinci)
Giampietrino·1520
Historical Context
Giampietrino's Copy after Leonardo's Last Supper is among the most significant surviving documentation of Leonardo's famous Milan mural before its deterioration. Leonardo's Last Supper in Santa Maria delle Grazie began deteriorating almost immediately after its completion around 1498, and the copies made by his Milanese pupils provide crucial evidence for the original's appearance. Giampietrino's version, among the most complete early copies, was made when the original was still in relatively good condition and preserves color information and figure details that have since been lost. This makes it an invaluable art historical document as well as an accomplished painting in its own right.
Technical Analysis
The painting demonstrates the technical conventions and artistic vocabulary of the period, with attention to composition, color, and the rendering of form appropriate to the subject.
