Saint Mary Magdalen

Saint Mary Magdalen (c. 1630-35), in the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, is another of Reni's many treatments of the penitent saint, her upward-gazing eyes and flowing hair creating the characteristic image of spiritual rapture that became virtually synonymous with his name. Reni's Magdalenes achieved such widespread fame that they influenced the representation of the saint across European art for generations. Glasgow's collection of Italian art, built through purchases and donations during the Victorian era, includes this as a representative example of the Bolognese classical tradition.

Oil on canvas, the religious composition demonstrates Guido Reni's skilled technique and careful observation in service of sacred narrative. The figural arrangement draws on established iconographic tradition while the handling of light and color creates emotional resonance.
