Sir Hans Sloane (1660–1753)
Godfrey Kneller·1716
Historical Context
This 1716 portrait of Sir Hans Sloane depicts the physician and naturalist whose vast collection of natural history specimens, books, manuscripts, and antiquities formed the founding collection of the British Museum when it opened in 1753. Sloane's collection of over 71,000 objects, acquired through decades of medical practice, travel, and purchase, was the largest private collection in Britain and the most comprehensive natural history collection in the world. Kneller's portrait of the young Sloane in 1716 captures him decades before the full expression of his collecting ambition, but already established as a Fellow of the Royal Society and physician to the aristocracy.
Technical Analysis
Kneller presents the naturalist-physician with the scholarly authority appropriate to his dual role in medicine and science, the portrait conveying intellectual gravitas through measured pose and direct gaze.
