George Maltby, Esq. (1731–1794) by William Beechey

George Maltby, Esq. (1731–1794)

William Beechey·1782

Historical Context

William Beechey's portrait of George Maltby (1731–1794) belongs to the broad body of professional portraiture he produced for middle and upper gentry clients throughout the late eighteenth century. Beechey established himself as one of the most reliable portraitists of the English professional and landowning classes, a step below the fashionable heights occupied by Reynolds and Gainsborough but entirely competent in conveying respectability and social standing. Maltby was a country gentleman of moderate prominence, and Beechey's portrait would have served as a family record of paternal authority and social position.

Technical Analysis

Beechey's portrait formula for male sitters is fully operative: dark coat, white cravat, landscape or neutral background, three-quarter pose, confident gaze. The face is modelled with careful attention to likeness rather than a generic type.
