Sir Nicholas Conway Colthurst (1789–1829), Bart
Martin Archer Shee·1808
Historical Context
Sir Nicholas Conway Colthurst, 3rd Baronet, a young Irish landowner from County Cork, appears in this 1808 portrait at Eton College. Colthurst, who died at forty in 1829, was educated at Eton alongside many of the Anglo-Irish gentry who formed one of Shee's principal patronage networks. The practice of commissioning portraits for institutional display at one's school preserved an aristocratic connection to the educational institution that had formed one's social identity, and Eton's portrait collection preserves the faces of generations of its Old Boys. Shee's Irish origins made him a natural choice for commissions from the Anglo-Irish community, and the Eton portraits cluster around a network of families with Irish estate connections.
Technical Analysis
The young baronet"s portrait shows the smooth features and clear complexion of youth, rendered with the sympathetic touch Shee brought to younger sitters. The palette is warm and relatively simple, with the dark coat and bright face creating the standard tonal contrast. The handling shows Shee"s professional efficiency without the extra effort he reserved for his most important commissions.
