William Pitt the Younger (1759–1806), Prime Minister (1783–1801 & 1804–1806)
John Hoppner·1806
Historical Context
William Pitt the Younger from 1806 by Hoppner at Trinity College depicts the Prime Minister who led Britain through much of the Napoleonic Wars. Pitt died in January 1806, and this portrait may be one of the last painted from life or from studies made shortly before his death. Hoppner's oil handling favored warm flesh tones over silvery grey half-shadows, producing an immediate vivacity that reflected his admiration for Reynolds and Gainsborough.
Technical Analysis
The statesman is rendered with the formal authority appropriate to a national leader, Hoppner's naturalistic technique conveying both political power and the physical strain of wartime leadership.
