Ladies Alice, Jane and Caroline Gordon by George Hayter

Ladies Alice, Jane and Caroline Gordon

George Hayter·1815

Historical Context

The three Gordon sisters—Alice, Jane, and Caroline—were daughters of the 4th Earl of Aberdeen, the future Prime Minister. Hayter painted this group portrait in 1815, early in his career, and it remains at Haddo House, the Aberdeen family’s estate in northeast Scotland. Multi-figure portraits of aristocratic children were a lucrative genre, requiring the painter to balance individual characterization with compositional harmony. George Hayter was the preeminent British history and portrait painter of the early Victorian era, appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria in 1841.

Technical Analysis

The three young women are arranged with graceful informality, their pale dresses creating a light focal area against a darker background. Hayter differentiates each sister’s features while maintaining a unified family resemblance.
