Historical Context
Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland, painted by Thomas Phillips in 1817, was one of the great aristocratic patrons of the Regency period who held positions at Cambridge University and in the Order of the Garter. Phillips was among the leading portrait painters in London after Lawrence. The portrait at St John's College Cambridge exemplifies the formal tradition of institutional portraiture that Phillips sustained for universities and learned bodies throughout his career.
