The Honourable George Rice Trevor (1795–1869)
George Hayter·1835
Historical Context
George Rice Trevor, later 1st Baron Dynevor, was a Welsh politician and landowner whom Hayter painted in 1835 for what is now the National Museum Cardiff. Trevor represented Carmarthenshire and was active in the politics of south Wales during the reform era. His portrait’s presence in the Welsh national collection reflects his regional political significance. George Hayter was the preeminent British history and portrait painter of the early Victorian era, appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria in 1841.
Technical Analysis
Hayter presents the Welsh landowner with restrained dignity, the portrait’s sober palette of dark tones relieved by the careful rendering of the sitter’s intelligent, direct gaze.
