Ada King (1815–1852), Countess of Lovelace, Mathematician, Daughter of Lord Byron by Margaret Sarah Carpenter

Ada King (1815–1852), Countess of Lovelace, Mathematician, Daughter of Lord Byron

Margaret Sarah Carpenter·1836

Historical Context

Margaret Sarah Carpenter painted Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, in 1836. Ada, the daughter of Lord Byron, is now celebrated as a pioneer of computing for her work with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine. In 1836 she was a young countess known primarily as Byron's daughter, and her mathematical genius was not yet widely recognized. Carpenter captured her during the period of her emerging intellectual life.

Technical Analysis

Carpenter's portrait presents Ada with an alert, intelligent expression that hints at the intellectual energy for which she would become famous. The warm palette and careful attention to the sitter's features demonstrate Carpenter's refined portrait technique.
