On the Tiber
Historical Context
On the Tiber from 1840 by Augustus Wall Callcott reflects his Italian experience, depicting the river that flows through Rome. Italian river scenes allowed Callcott to combine his skill in water painting with the warm Mediterranean light he had observed during his travels. Callcott, knighted in 1837 and later Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures, combined English landscape traditions with Italian influence in a polished establishment style that proved consistently popular with collectors.
Technical Analysis
The Italian river scene is rendered with warm, luminous light characteristic of Callcott's Italian-inspired work, the Tiber's surface reflecting the surrounding landscape.
