Anbetung der Könige.
Jan Provoost·1520
Historical Context
Jan Provoost's Adoration of the Kings (Anbetung der Könige) belongs to the Bruges master's production of this most commercially successful of all devotional subjects. The Magi's journey and homage to the Christ child offered painters opportunities for exotic pageantry, processions of varied figures, and the combination of devotional significance with visual spectacle that made this subject perennially popular with wealthy patrons. Provoost's Bruges training and his awareness of Flemish workshop conventions give his Adoration the technical precision and warm devotional atmosphere expected of works produced in the tradition of Memling and David.
Technical Analysis
The painting demonstrates the technical conventions and artistic vocabulary of the period, with attention to composition, color, and the rendering of form appropriate to the subject.
