Saint John the Evangelist (?) by Domenichino

Saint John the Evangelist (?)

Domenichino·c. 1611

Historical Context

This tentatively identified Saint John the Evangelist at the Cyfarthfa Castle Museum, dating from about 1611, shows Domenichino working on the single-figure devotional type that was staple production for Roman painters serving the city's countless churches and private oratories. Domenichino's classical approach to narrative painting, combining Raphael's formal clarity with Annibale Carracci's naturalism, made him one of the most respected painters in seventeenth-century Rome and a key figure in the tradition that led to Nicolas Poussin's French classicism.

Technical Analysis

The evangelist's upward gaze suggests divine inspiration, with Domenichino's smooth, idealized treatment of the face and careful drapery arrangement reflecting the classicizing principles of the Carracci school.
