Dutch River Scene with Cattle
Aelbert Cuyp·c. 1656
Historical Context
Dutch River Scene with Cattle from around 1656 combines two of Aelbert Cuyp's specialties—river views and cattle painting—in a composition that epitomizes his pastoral vision of the Dutch countryside. Such scenes presented an idealized image of rural prosperity bathed in golden Mediterranean-inspired light. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays warm amber-golden tonality derived from Jan Both's Italianate landscapes, serene cattle and horse subjects bathed in afternoon light, the Rhine at Dordrecht seen through a Mediterranean filter.
Technical Analysis
The cattle are positioned prominently near the water's edge, with their forms reflected in the calm river surface and the whole scene unified by Cuyp's warm, golden atmospheric light.
