John Eveleigh, DD, Provost (1781–1814)

John Eveleigh, Provost of Oriel College Oxford from around 1784 by John Hoppner documents the academic who led Oriel from 1781 to 1814. College provost portraits were important institutional records, displayed in college halls and common rooms. Hoppner's oil handling favored warm flesh tones over silvery grey half-shadows, producing an immediate vivacity that reflected his admiration for Reynolds and Gainsborough.
