General the Honourable Frederick St John (1763–1844), Brother to the 3rd Viscount Bolingbroke
John Hoppner·c. 1784
Historical Context
General the Honourable Frederick St John, brother of the 3rd Viscount Bolingbroke, from around 1784 by John Hoppner, is a companion piece to the portrait of the viscount. Military portraits of younger sons documented the career paths available to the younger members of aristocratic families. Hoppner's oil handling favored warm flesh tones over silvery grey half-shadows, producing an immediate vivacity that reflected his admiration for Reynolds and Gainsborough.
Technical Analysis
The military portrait renders the general with appropriate martial bearing, executed in Hoppner's fluid technique with attention to both uniform and personal features.
