William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire
George Hayter·1835
Historical Context
William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire, was a prominent Whig politician who sat for Hayter as part of the mammoth House of Commons project documenting the first Reformed Parliament of 1833. The Parliamentary Art Collection preserves this study, one of the hundreds Hayter painted to capture the likeness of each individual MP. Cavendish would go on to serve as Chancellor of Cambridge University for over three decades. George Hayter was the preeminent British history and portrait painter of the early Victorian era, appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria in 1841.
Technical Analysis
The rapid oil sketch prioritizes capturing the sitter’s distinctive features with minimal background elaboration. Hayter’s portrait shorthand—a few confident strokes defining brow, nose, and jawline—is highly efficient.
