'Prosperity' Frederick John Robinson
Thomas Lawrence·1823
Historical Context
Frederick John Robinson, known as "Prosperity" Robinson for his optimistic budgets as Chancellor of the Exchequer, served as Prime Minister in 1827-28 as Viscount Goderich. His brief premiership was one of the least distinguished in British history — he resigned without ever facing Parliament. Painted in 1823 during his more successful Exchequer years, this portrait at Ripon Town Hall commemorates his connection to the Yorkshire constituency he represented.
Technical Analysis
Lawrence paints the Chancellor with polished competence, the cheerful features suggesting the optimism that earned Robinson his nickname. The warm palette and confident handling create a flattering but plausible likeness of a man whose affability was both his greatest charm and his political limitation.
