Landscape with Bandits (panel 2 of 2)
Salvator Rosa·c. 1644
Historical Context
The companion panel to the first bandits scene continues the narrative of outlaw life in the mountains, also at Lamport Hall. Paired paintings allowed Rosa to develop his bandit narratives across a broader visual field, with the two panels creating a panoramic view of the wild terrain that sheltered real-world brigands in the mountainous regions between Naples and Rome. The Isham family of Lamport Hall were notable collectors who acquired Italian paintings as part of their Grand Tour purchases.
Technical Analysis
The second panel complements the first in composition and palette, maintaining visual continuity when the two are displayed together. Rosa adjusts the landscape elements to create variety while sustaining the same threatening atmosphere. The handling of figures and terrain is consistent with the companion piece, though subtle differences in light direction and spatial arrangement give each panel its own compositional identity.
