On the Scheldt by Clarkson Frederick Stanfield

On the Scheldt

Clarkson Frederick Stanfield·c. 1830

Historical Context

On the Scheldt at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery depicts the great Belgian-Dutch river system that was one of Europe’s busiest commercial waterways. Stanfield’s Scheldt paintings place him in the tradition of Dutch river painting while adding Victorian atmospheric sensibility to the established genre. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays dramatic atmospheric effects, precise marine detail derived from his seafaring experience, theatrical compositions informed by years as a scene painter at Drury Lane.

Technical Analysis

The river scene features multiple vessels in the characteristic flat landscape of the Low Countries. Stanfield’s atmospheric rendering of the wide estuary captures the distinctive light of the Scheldt region.
