Thomas Poynder Junior, Treasurer of Christ's Hospital (1824–1835)
Martin Archer Shee·c. 1810
Historical Context
Thomas Poynder Junior, Treasurer of Christ"s Hospital from 1824 to 1835, appears in this portrait from around 1810 at the famous Bluecoat school. Christ"s Hospital, founded by Edward VI in 1552, maintained a gallery of portraits documenting its benefactors and officers, and Poynder"s image takes its place in this institutional collection. As Treasurer, Poynder oversaw the finances of one of London"s most historic charitable foundations during a period of growth and reform.
Technical Analysis
The institutional portrait format—half-length against a plain background with perhaps a suggestion of books or papers—serves the requirements of a charity portrait gallery. Shee"s treatment is workmanlike and dignified, appropriate to a sitter whose significance is administrative rather than glamorous. The palette is restricted to dark suit, white linen, and warm face, with the brushwork professional rather than inspired.
