Napoleon Bonaparte from around 1827 by Paul Delaroche is one of his numerous depictions of the emperor who remained the most potent historical figure in nineteenth-century French art. Napoleonic subjects were commercial successes and central to Delaroche's reputation. Delaroche was the most commercially successful French painter of the 1830s, combining meticulous historical research with theatrical staging and emotional directness that made his large history paintings extraordinarily popular.
