Don Quixote by Charles Robert Leslie

Don Quixote

Charles Robert Leslie·c. 1827

Historical Context

Don Quixote at the Ulster Museum reflects Leslie’s lifelong engagement with Cervantes’ novel, which provided subjects for some of his most popular paintings. Leslie’s Don Quixote illustrations, praised for their gentle humor and faithful interpretation of the text, helped establish him as the leading literary painter of the Victorian era. Romanticism (c.1800–1850) privileged emotion, imagination, and the sublime over classical reason. Romanticism embraced a wider range of subjects than any previous movement, from medieval legend to contemporary politics, from sublime landscape to intimate genre scenes, united by emotional intensity rather than formal type.

Technical Analysis

Leslie’s rendering of the literary character combines comic observation with sympathetic warmth. His detailed handling of costume and setting creates a convincing period atmosphere for the Spanish narrative.
