Historical Context
La Baie de Sainte-Adresse, painted in 1906, depicts the bay near Le Havre where Dufy was born and to which he returned repeatedly throughout his career. Sainte-Adresse also figures prominently in Monet's oeuvre, and Dufy's choice of the same site in this Fauve-inflected painting reflects his conscious engagement with the Impressionist legacy—which he was simultaneously absorbing and transforming. The sea and sky at Sainte-Adresse gave him expanses of color that he could push toward pure chromatic intensity.
Technical Analysis
Sea and sky are distinguished by temperature rather than precise observation—the water rendered in strokes of vivid blue and green, the sky in warmer blues and white. The shoreline is indicated with quick horizontal marks, and any architectural elements are reduced to minimal geometric notations amid the dominant chromatic field.
