George Canning (1770–1827)

George Canning from around 1784 by John Hoppner depicts the brilliant politician who would become Foreign Secretary and briefly Prime Minister in 1827. The portrait captures Canning in his earlier years, when his oratorical brilliance and political ambition were already apparent. Hoppner's oil handling favored warm flesh tones over silvery grey half-shadows, producing an immediate vivacity that reflected his admiration for Reynolds and Gainsborough.
