Cattle on a River Bank
Aelbert Cuyp·c. 1656
Historical Context
Cattle on a River Bank from around 1656 is a quintessential Cuyp pastoral, depicting his favorite subjects of cattle, water, and golden light in perfect harmony. These serene riverside scenes became hugely popular with English collectors in the eighteenth century, establishing Cuyp's international reputation. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays warm amber-golden tonality derived from Jan Both's Italianate landscapes, serene cattle and horse subjects bathed in afternoon light, the Rhine at Dordrecht seen through a Mediterranean filter.
Technical Analysis
The cattle are positioned along the river bank in a carefully balanced arrangement, with their reflections in the water and the warm atmospheric light creating a sense of pastoral tranquility.
