The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John by Annibale Carracci

The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John

Annibale Carracci·c. 1585

Historical Context

The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John (c. 1585-90), at Christ Church, Oxford, is a devotional painting combining the nuclear sacred family with the infant Baptist — a grouping that emphasized the parallel missions of Christ and his forerunner. Annibale renders the intimate scene with the warmth and naturalism of his Bolognese period, presenting the sacred figures as an Italian family observed from life. The painting's presence at Christ Church reflects General Guise's eighteenth-century bequest, which brought important Italian paintings to Oxford and established one of Britain's finest academic art collections.

Technical Analysis

The compact composition groups the mourning figures tightly around the dead Christ. Cima's clear, even lighting creates a sense of calm restraint that contrasts with more emotionally turbulent treatments of the subject by other painters.
