Sir George Harnage (1767–1836) (formerly George Blackman) by John Hoppner

Sir George Harnage (1767–1836) (formerly George Blackman)

John Hoppner·c. 1784

Historical Context

Sir George Harnage from around 1784 by John Hoppner depicts a baronet who had changed his name from George Blackman. Name changes upon inheriting titles or estates were common in Georgian England, and portraits often documented both identities. Hoppner's oil handling favored warm flesh tones over silvery grey half-shadows, producing an immediate vivacity that reflected his admiration for Reynolds and Gainsborough. Portrait Painter to the Prince of Wales from 1793, prolific exhibitor at the Royal Academy.

Technical Analysis

The baronet's portrait is rendered in Hoppner's characteristic broad manner, with fluid brushwork creating an atmospheric quality that gives the portrait warmth and immediacy.
