Lord John Russell (1792–1878), afterwards the 1st Earl Russell by George Hayter

Lord John Russell (1792–1878), afterwards the 1st Earl Russell

George Hayter·c. 1832

Historical Context

Lord John Russell was one of the chief architects of the 1832 Reform Act and later twice served as Prime Minister. This portrait study at Weston Park captures him during the period of his greatest legislative achievement, when he was shepherding the Reform Bill through the House of Commons. Russell’s slight, almost fragile appearance belied his formidable political determination—a contrast Hayter’s portrait preserves. George Hayter was the preeminent British history and portrait painter of the early Victorian era, appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria in 1841.

Technical Analysis

Hayter renders Russell’s distinctively small, alert features with characterful precision. The quick, confident brushwork of the preparatory sketch captures personality more vividly than a finished portrait might.
