Landscape with Cattle
Aelbert Cuyp·c. 1656
Historical Context
Landscape with Cattle from around 1656 represents the pastoral landscape type that was Aelbert Cuyp's most commercially successful and artistically characteristic format. His ability to render cattle with naturalistic conviction within idealized, light-filled landscapes was unmatched among Dutch Golden Age painters. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays warm amber-golden tonality derived from Jan Both's Italianate landscapes, serene cattle and horse subjects bathed in afternoon light, the Rhine at Dordrecht seen through a Mediterranean filter.
Technical Analysis
The cattle dominate the foreground as warm, solidly modeled forms, while the landscape recedes in gentle atmospheric gradations that are characteristic of Cuyp's golden-light style.
