Cupid with His Bow by Guido Reni

Cupid with His Bow

Guido Reni·c. 1609

Historical Context

This Cupid with His Bow, painted around 1609, is held at Weston Park in Shropshire. The subject of Cupid — the god of love armed with his bow — was one of Reni's most popular mythological subjects, painted in numerous versions for collectors across Europe. Reni's depictions of the young god combine classical idealism with a playful sensuality, creating images that were enormously popular with aristocratic collectors. The subject allowed Reni to demonstrate his mastery of idealized youthful anatomy and his gift for creating figures of consummate grace.

Technical Analysis

The figure of Cupid is rendered with Reni's characteristic porcelain-smooth flesh painting and idealized anatomy derived from classical sculpture. The luminous palette and careful modeling create a figure of ethereal beauty, with the bow providing a dynamic diagonal element within the graceful composition.
