Adoration of the Magi
Master of Frankfurt·1515
Historical Context
The Master of Frankfurt painted this Adoration of the Magi around 1510, one of the most theatrically elaborate subjects in northern European painting, requiring the depiction of three kings with their exotic retinues before the humble stable. This anonymous painter active in Frankfurt and Antwerp produced Adoration compositions that combined the Flemish tradition's meticulous detail with a new taste for architectural grandeur and compositional complexity. The Adoration was among the most commercially successful subjects for Antwerp's export market, and the Master of Frankfurt's versions demonstrate how the iconographic type was continuously renewed through new costume and architectural detail while maintaining the basic devotional framework. The kings' gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh allowed painters to display their skill in rendering precious materials.
Technical Analysis
