Adoration of the Three Kings
Master of Frankfurt·1512
Historical Context
The Master of Frankfurt painted this Adoration of the Three Kings around 1510, a large-format altarpiece depicting the Epiphany with the elaborately costumed retinue and exotic architectural setting characteristic of his Adoration compositions. The Three Kings Adoration was among the most commercially successful subjects in the Frankfurt and Antwerp export market, combining universal devotional appeal with maximum opportunity for the display of pictorial richness. The Master of Frankfurt's Adoration panels are distinguished by their careful attention to physiognomic character—each figure individualized—and the precise rendering of materials: the kings' gold and jeweled crowns, the richly embroidered garments, the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The ruined architectural setting, suggesting the Old Testament world being superseded by the New, creates the spatial framework for the sacred encounter.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates the workshop's practiced handling of the Adoration formula with elaborate costume details, clear spatial organization, and the rich coloring characteristic of Antwerp production.
