Madonna and Child enthroned flanked by saints John the baptist, Peter, Paul and Zenobius (?) and two angels, below them two donors
Taddeo Gaddi·1330
Historical Context
This monumental sacra conversazione by Taddeo Gaddi, painted around 1330, shows the Madonna and Child enthroned with Saints John the Baptist, Peter, Paul, and Zenobius, with two small donor figures below. Taddeo Gaddi was Giotto's longest-serving assistant and his most important follower, who inherited the master's workshop and continued the Giottesque tradition in Florence for decades. Now in the Royal Castle in Warsaw, the panel's presence outside Italy reflects centuries of European art collecting that dispersed Italian Gothic works across the continent.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera and gold on a large panel with an architectural throne structure reflecting Giottesque spatial design. Taddeo Gaddi's solid figural modeling and clear, warm palette carry forward Giotto's innovations, while the small donor figures at the base follow Gothic devotional conventions.
