Haystack on the Banks of the Loing by Alfred Sisley

Haystack on the Banks of the Loing

Alfred Sisley·1891

Historical Context

Haystack on the Banks of the Loing belongs to Sisley's late period, when he had settled in Moret-sur-Loing and the river Loing and its surrounding agricultural landscape became his primary subject. He painted haystacks—singular or in groups—in a tradition that connects him to Millet's peasant subjects and anticipates Monet's famous series of 1890–91. Unlike Monet, who used the haystack series to systematically explore light conditions at different hours and seasons, Sisley was drawn to the haystack as a compositional element within a broader river landscape—the rounded form of the hay mass contrasting with the horizontal sweep of the Loing. His late work has a greater solidity and formal calm than his earlier more fluid handling.

Technical Analysis

The haystack's rounded mass occupies a significant portion of the composition, its warm ochre-brown providing tonal warmth against the cooler greens and blues of the river landscape. Sisley renders hay with relatively regular, parallel strokes that describe its tightly packed surface, quite different from the looser handling of vegetation or sky. The Loing behind reflects sky tones in horizontal strokes, completing the compositional dialogue between warm haystack and cool water.
