Jeune fille, la main sur la poignée de la porte
Édouard Vuillard·1891
Historical Context
Jeune fille, la main sur la poignée de la porte (Young Woman, Her Hand on the Door Handle) participates in the door-threshold motif that appears regularly in Vuillard's domestic work. A figure pausing at a door — hand on the handle, about to enter or just having arrived — captures the transitional moment that fascinated him: presence and absence simultaneously, the figure who exists in the liminal space between rooms, between inside and outside. His mother opening a door, a woman entering from outside, a young woman pausing at the threshold — these moments define a recurring preoccupation with the domestic architecture of arrival and departure.
Technical Analysis
The door frame creates a strong vertical and horizontal structure in the composition, with the figure compressed into the doorway space. The light from beyond the door or within the room creates the tonal organisation. Vuillard renders the door's wooden surface with the same attention as the figure beside it.
