La pietà, angeli e il committente Giovanni da Ethinl
Historical Context
Simone dei Crocifissi was the leading painter of fourteenth-century Bologna, named for his frequent depictions of the Crucifixion. This Pietà with Angels and the Donor Giovanni da Ethinl at the Davia Bargellini Museum combines the devotional image of the dead Christ with donor portraiture, a format that allowed patrons to insert themselves into sacred narrative as perpetual supplicants. Bologna's artistic culture in this period was shaped by its university, the papal legate's court, and powerful confraternities.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on gold ground panel, the composition places the Pietà group centrally with flanking angels and the kneeling donor at reduced scale. Simone's style blends Bolognese expressiveness with influences from both Florentine and Emilian painting traditions.
