The lamentation over the dead Christ
Historical Context
This Lamentation over the Dead Christ by the Master of Saint Francis, an anonymous Umbrian painter active around 1260-1280, is one of the key works of the early Gothic painting tradition in central Italy. The Master of Saint Francis was among the first Italian painters to move beyond rigid Byzantine conventions toward more emotionally expressive compositions influenced by Franciscan devotional practices. Now at the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia, the panel reflects the Franciscan emphasis on compassionate identification with Christ's Passion that transformed Italian religious art in the thirteenth century.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera and gold on panel, the composition arranges mourning figures around the body of Christ with the rhythmic, processional quality typical of Duecento narrative painting. The Master's style shows a distinctive blend of Byzantine formal conventions with a new attention to emotional gesture and spatial depth.
